Self-compassion break

Finding calm during burnout 🔥

When burnout hits, even a brief moment of self-compassion can make a profound difference. This practice isn’t a quick fix or a magic solution; it’s an invitation to pause, connect with your inner kindness, and regain balance. By treating yourself with the same care and understanding you’d offer a dear friend, you can begin to soften the edges of overwhelm. Over time, this simple practice can become a steady resource, helping you meet challenging moments with greater gentleness.

What sets this practice apart is its flexibility. There’s no need for a special setting or a large block of time. It can be as brief as a single minute, just enough to breathe, acknowledge what’s happening, and offer yourself a kind word. Or it can be more extended, allowing you to settle deeply into calm and reflection. Once you’ve practised a few times, you won’t need any guidance; you’ll carry this skill with you, ready whenever you need it most.

The framework for this self-compassion break is drawn from the teachings of Kristin Neff, a leading authority in the field of self-compassion. The steps are simple yet profound:

  1. Finding a comfortable position.

You can keep your eyes open, let them close, or lower your gaze to a soft point of focus. Taking a moment to settle. If you’re on the move, ensure you’re in a safe space.

  2. Acknowledging the difficulty.

Thinking of a mild challenge or stressor, something that feels manageable. On a scale of 1 to 10, aiming for about a 4. Tuning into how this difficulty feels in your body. Noticing any sensations or emotions. There’s no need to fix anything; simply letting yourself be present with what’s here.

Now bringing in mindfulness, gently noting your experience. Choosing one or more of these phrases, or creating your own, and saying it slowly to yourself:

    • “This is a moment of suffering.”

    • “This is unpleasant.”

    • “This does not feel good.”

  3. Connecting with common humanity.

Remembering that you’re not alone in this experience. Challenges and struggles are a natural part of life. Choosing a phrase that resonates and saying it slowly to yourself:

    • “Suffering is a part of living.”

    • “I’m not alone.”

    • “Others would feel just like me.”

  4. Offering yourself kindness.

Placing your hands on your heart, or on another spot that feels comforting. Feeling the warmth of your touch. Then, saying to yourself:

    • “May I be kind to myself.”

    • “May I give myself what I need.”

    • “May I accept myself just as I am.”

    • “May I have the courage or strength to make a change.”

If you’re unsure what to say, imagine a dear friend or loved one facing the same challenge. How would you comfort them without offering advice or trying to fix their problem?

  5. Gently coming back.

When you’re ready, lifting your gaze or opening your eyes. Noticing how you feel now. Perhaps there’s a little more space, a touch of ease, or simply a sense that you’ve been kind to yourself.
